In the Little Italy neighborhood of Chicago, a restaurant and bakery were in the transition mode of moving from an older to a newer building location. Before the move, when the first heat wave hit downtown Chicago in the summer of 2023, the permanent AC went down. The property building manager refused to repair the air conditioner because of the AC repair cost in the old building. Regardless, the old building was going to be demoed after the completion of the new building around the corner. Therefore it was more economical to rent portable spot cooling equipment. We received the call for immediate cooling expertise. Shortly afterwards, we arrived at the customers location for a spec out. When we entered the premises, the heat load in the space was unbearable due to the ovens and grills. The customer requested cooling relief where the customers picked up baking goods and in the adjacent restaurant seating area. When emergency cooling is requested for older buildings, they can be challenging and involve more work than normal especially with plumbing and electrical interface.
