Located in the Sauganash neighborhood of Chicago, an AC mobile unit installation was necessary in a classroom. Since the main AC unit was not properly sized for ductwork, the airflow from the main unit could not reach the classroom on the outside perimeter of the building. The cooling airflow from the main RTU favored shorter less resistive building areas where cooling was great, except for this one location. When we arrived, we looked above the ceiling for potential ductwork dampers being closed or restricted. There was no simple building ductwork solution, so we proposed a temporary cooling solution for the hot classroom.
With the flexibility of Oceanaire water-cooled units, we proposed a portable unit with an evaporator discharge plenum. We ducted the portable unit to the permanent sheet metal ducting of the building. We blocked off some of the main sheet metal ducting of the building, to force the portable AC cooling into the classroom. Since cold air falls, we were able to successfully direct the cool air from the portable to the ceiling level of the classroom. This approach brought down the temperature to comfortable levels. We were fortunate that the classroom was located next to a utility room, where the unit could be placed and ducted to the permanent building ductwork achieving a clean installation, while keeping the sound level to a minimum.
